Many people will go on a wellness day when they feel the need to improve their health, but can the benefits really extend beyond the time you spend there and continue when you have returned home?
Cynics might suggest not, but taking this time for yourself can help kick-start lifestyle changes that will help you get fitter, feel more energetic and live longer.
Many people have ideas about what will help you live longer, some more scientifically-rooted than others. We would suggest ignoring ‘old wives tales’ (even if the odd one has some truth in it) and listening to the experts – such as those at Harvard University in the US.
They’ve listed a number of factors shown to be helpful in lengthening life, from getting a good night’s sleep to diet and fitness. Wellness days can help you start to feel the benefits of these things – and start you on the road to making them habitual parts of your life.
Good nutrition tops the Harvard list and there are good reasons for this. It is not just that sugar and fat can make you put on weight and be more vulnerable to conditions like diabetes; they also deprive cells of the nutrition they need to function well and be less vulnerable to disease and infection.
Getting lots of exercise and staying fit is related to this and is also a well-known aid to a longer life, but there are also some good habits that you may not be aware of.
For instance, you may know you should exercise well, but getting a good night’s sleep can also help you live longer, as too little sleep puts strain on essential organs.
Similarly, while most people understand too much alcohol is bad for you, not so many know that drinking plenty of water to stay well hydrated appears to be associated with fewer chronic conditions such as heart disease.
This goes to show that wellness days could be just the start of a lifestyle overhaul for many people – often in ways you might not have been aware of before.
