There are all sorts of ways to indulge in some self-care, whether that’s prioritising sleep, ensuring that you follow a healthy and nutritious diet, or getting lots of exercise on a regular basis.
However, there’s one particularly wonderful and relaxing way to give yourself a health boost that you may not have considered before… and that’s getting in the sauna whenever you can!
There’s nothing quite like opening the sauna door and being greeted by that beautifully welcoming warm embrace – particularly during the winter, as the wind, rain, sleet and snow swirl all around us, chilling us to the bone.
But you’ll be pleased to hear that, heat aside, there are plenty of health benefits associated with regular sauna time, so you can warm your cockles while looking after yourself, all at the same time.
If you’re very active and enjoy lots of exercise, the sauna can help soothe your tired and aching joints and muscles, reducing your recovery time and improving blood circulation while helping your body to release endorphins and eliminate toxins like lactic acid that build up as you train.
It’s also certainly worth noting that regular sauna use could help protect you against cognitive decline – and with dementia now the UK’s biggest killer, making some lifestyle changes to help protect yourself is perhaps wise.
One study, in fact, suggests that indulging in some sauna time four to seven times a week could actually reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s by 67 per cent, compared to if you just went once a week.
Physical health aside, the heat of the sauna can also work wonders on your mental and emotional health, helping to ease any feelings of stress and anxiety you may be experiencing.
The next time you’re in the sauna, try doing some mindfulness meditation exercises such as a full body scan, breathing in deeply and checking in with your body to identify any areas of tension, directing your breath to these areas to help them relax. A few minutes of slow, deep breathing and you’re sure to leave feeling fully restored and rejuvenated.
And, of course, let’s not forget the social aspect of sauna bathing. While you can certainly use your sauna time to relax in solitude, you can also use it as an opportunity to spend time with friends and family!
Naturally, these are only a few of the benefits of getting in the sauna and you’re sure to discover all sorts of others for yourself once you start going regularly. We’d love to hear about your experiences of the saunas in our wellness pods and where you think the benefits lie, so get in touch to let us know!
